I was born in Denver, Colorado but have spent the last 22 years in New York City. I moved here to attend Parsons School of Design, where I studied illustration and painting, graduating with a BFA in illustration. I began tattooing more than 17 years ago in the good old underground days of NYC and the Tattoo Society meetings at CBGB’s Gallery.
This was all before the horrors of West 4th St. and the tattoo explosion nationwide, way before (insert city name here) Ink television shows. I have worked at Crooklyn’s Cave and Huggy Bear Tattoo in Brooklyn, Inkline Studio and Sacred Tattoo in Manhattan. In 1998 I started Triple X Tattoo with a partner and ran it for 8 years until we separated. I kept the location but changed the name to Red Rocket Tattoo and have been going strong and growing ever since. In 2009 we opened our second location in Levittown, Long Island and are pushing hard out on the Island!
I have tattooed in Austria, Germany, Spain, Poland, Japan and throughout the United States. I have been featured in tattoo, art and popular magazines from around the world and served as a liaison between the New York City Tattoo Convention and the New York Department of Health. I have curated and participated in over 30 Gallery shows with my paintings and drawings and have a website—www.michaelbellamy.com—featuring my fine artwork.
I also travel the world for adventure and pleasure. I am an avid mountain climber and have summitted 4 out of the Seven Summits: Kilimanjaro in Africa, Elbrus in Russia, Denali in Alaska and Vinson Massif in Antarctica. I have attempted Aconcagua in Argentina twice but have yet to make that one. I began climbing in Colorado and have topped out on all 54 14,000 foot peaks. I also like long walks on the beach!
